LHC at Full Power
Submitted by geek on Tue, 03/30/2010 - 03:08The good people at CERN are trying to collide particles at 7 TeV. Watch the web cast at http://webcast.cern.ch/lhcfirstphysics/
Collisions could take a few hours or a few days. Updates will follow as I get them. This is a very exciting time for physics. Construction was started in 2001 using the 12 ft wide 17 mile tunnel that was the Large Electron–Positron Collider built from 1983-1988. After over coming many technological problems, they are finally starting to run at full power.
User Accounts
Submitted by geek on Mon, 03/22/2010 - 20:16Ok, after fighting spam via the email server, I've decided to try a pure CAPTCHA system and see if that works. If you have tried creating an account and did not get an email verification, please try and sign up again.
I'm going to try things really lax at first and see how it goes, but if the spam gets bad again, I'll have to come up with something else.

These are from Ellsworth AFB in South Dekota. Not too far from Mount Rushmore, Black hills area.
Open as a WWII bomber based, grew into a strategic air command site ( nuclear bombers) and
now controls surveillance satellites.

Trip to Cape Canaveral
Submitted by geek on Thu, 11/05/2009 - 11:14Heading to Florida! Leave in the morning to spend a week at Cape Canaveral. The plan was to go down for the shuttle launch: spend 2-3 days touring the Cape, then watch the launch, grab some sun and surf. Well, when does anything ever go as planned. :) First, the shuttle launch was moved till the following week. Oh well. Maybe we will get to see something else. There is a Delta 4 going up, so we will see. Now looking at the radar it looks like there is a hurricane maybe heading that way. Will defiantly need to keep an eye on it.

I've included a couple of shots of Crazy Horse at the end. I would have liked to have had more, but it was raining. So I've just grouped them together with Rushmore.
Ares 1-X Launch Take 2
Submitted by geek on Wed, 10/28/2009 - 07:06Well, due to some bad timing with a cargo ship and then problems with the weather, the 1-X did not launch yesterday, but they're trying again today!
It's 7:00 and the clocks counting at T minus 40 mins. There is a built in hold at 4:00 min that will prob take longer then the planned 20 min. Right now they are talking about a launch attempt around 8:30 - 9:00. The big question is: Will the weather hold?
